Cooperation to boost Swedish research

A center of excellence within Silicon Carbide (SiC power electronics) has been established in Sweden through cooperation between Japanese Denso and Swedish Acreo. This strengthens Sweden’s leading position in R&D in this field.

Denso Corporation has signed a contract of cooperation with Acreo AB with the purpose to develop energy efficient silicon carbide transistors. Denso’s technology will form the basis of establishing a center of excellence in Sweden. Through this investment Denso will benefit from the world leading research that is available in Sweden.

The transistors are made from Silicon Carbide (SiC). The construction is based on new innovative materials and a process technology of both parties.

Results from a five year project

The deal between Denso and Acreo was formed from a joint research cooperation on Silicon Carbide. By combining the competence and experience of both parties it will become possible to produce high-performing, efficient Silicon Carbide components. In the future this will lead to smaller, lighter and more efficient power systems. Compared to conventional silicon technology both size and weight can be reduced without losing energy efficiency.

–  The agreement will take our business into a new phase and make it possible for us to evaluate the technology in real and demanding conditions. In addition the next generation of power supply components will become instantly available to Swedish power companies, says Mårten Armgarth, CEO of Acreo.

The process technology has been implemented at Acreos plant in Kista, Sweden, and the manufacture of components began in late 2010. If all goes according to plan the first components will be available for system evaluation in early 2011. Possible applications are DC-DC converters, battery chargers and solar cell plants.

Support from Invest Sweden
