Innovation Union Scoreboard: Sweden is the most innovative country in the EU

2011-02-03 13:30

Sweden is the leading country of the EU nations in regard to innovative ability, according to Innovation Union Scoreboard 2010. This is an annual report by Pro Inno Europe.

Innovation Union Scoreboard was previously named European Innovation Scoreboard. In this modified version there has been a revision of the indicators used to measure “innovation performance” among the EU member states.

There have been major changes, removals and additions of indicators compared to previous years. There are eight new indicators, eg. “Non_EU doctorate students as % of total doctorate student of the country” and “High-growth innovative enterprises”.
There aren’t that many surprising results in the rankings.

Sweden is as usual in a good position in the top. Finland have dropped one position and switched place with Denmark. The countries are divided in the following categories:

  • Leading
  • Followers
  • Moderate
  • Modest

Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Germany are leading. The countries with modest innovative ability are, not surprisingly, small or relatively new member states as Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Bulgaria.
